The Sabina arrived in Duluth on Sunday evening, August 6, 2000.
Here she is passing the lighthouse at the end of the south pier, ready to move under the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge.
She moves under the Bridge and into the Duluth harbor.
On a warm summer night in Duluth, a lot of people were out to greet the Sabina.
The next day, the Sabina loaded two of her four holds with bentonite at the Hallett Dock in West Duluth.
Just before leaving, a visitor hands Captain Simon Merritt his business card. He is down in the eating area of the 2-month old ship. Captain Gladwin was last in Duluth in December of 1997 when he brought the Mark C into port, again for bentonite at Hallett Dock. The Mark C was only 295 feet long and was the longest ship in the Carisbrooke Shipping Ltd. fleet. Based in England, the fleet is still getting bigger. The Sabina, at 419 feet long, is now the longest ship in the fleet. More and longer ships are being built.
From the stern, you can see the great colors on the ship, and the new paint job that still carries the sheen of a new vessel.
Finishing loading late afternoon on Monday, the Sabina departed the Hallett Dock, on the St. Louis River. Here she is rounding the traffic buoy in the harbor as she approaches the Lift Bridge.
Twenty-six hours after she arrived, the Sabina was on her way to Europe, although she stopped in Thunder Bay, Ontario to fill her last two holds with peas.
