This OBO carrier was built together with her sister ship RECIFE at the shipyard Chantiers de France-Dunkerque, Dunkerque (Dunkirk). The keel was laid on 22.05.1972 (hull No. 276), launched on 08.03.1973 as YEMANJÁ and delivered to her owners Swiss Overseas Navigation Corporation, Lugano on 27.06.1973. Registered under the flag of Liberia in Monrovia (official number: 4463, callsign: 5LJU). The management was initially taken over by Fritzen Schiffs-Agentur und Bereederungs GmbH. Emden).
The then wife of the ship owner, Hans Heinrich von Thyssen-Bornemisza, came from Brazil, hence the two Brazilian names Recife and Yemanjá. Recife is a port city in the north and Yemanjá means "Goddess of the sea and the seafarers" (Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes) and she is mainly worshipped in the north of Brazil. The name originally comes from the Yoruba religion in Nigeria and came to Brazil with the slaves.
As from 01.01.1979 Suisse-Outremer Reederei AG, Zürich took over the management.
On 17.03.1980 the ship was on a ballast voyage near the Canary Islands. The crew was busy washing the tanks and cargo holds when at 17:00 hrs at position 29° 30' N / 014° 30' W an explosion followed by fire occurred in cargo hold 11. The ship was diverted to Setubal, where the next large shipyard was located to carry out the necessary repairs. After completion of the repairs she sailed on 22.04.1980 from Setubal to Tubarao, Brazil.
Sold to Gulf Canada Resources Leasing Inc. Vancouver (Management: BeauDril Ltd., Calgary) on 01.07.1983 and renamed GULF BEAUFORT. Registered under the Canadian flag in Vancouver (call sign: VCMC, official number: 804160, new measurements BRT: 91'322, NRT: 75'881, DWT: 152'396). The OBO was sent to Herschel Island on the Arctic coast of Canada to be used as an oil storage vessel. Damaged by ice during this voyage from Vancouver to Herschel Island in September 1983. After temporary repairs she could continue her voyage to Herschel Island.
In 1986 sold to Mega Navigation Co Ltd Limassol (managers: Société Anonyme Monegasgue d'Administration Maritime et Aerienne, Monte Carlo, Monaco). Flagged out to Cyprus and renamed HUDSON BAY (official number: n.a., callsign C4RU).
In 1987 sold to Londra Maritime Inc. Panama (same management) and renamed HUDSON BAY 1, now under the flag of Panama (official No: 18078-HK, call sign: 3EWF5, BRT: 90'871, NRT: 53'561, DWT: 152'396).
On 26.01.1993 during heavy weather reported as drifting and not under control off Helgoland due to engine failure. However, the engine could be repaired and the ship resumed her voyage to Richards Bay on 27.01.1993 at 02:50 hours.
In 1996 sold to the Indian demolition company Alang Shipbreakers Pvt. Ltd and beached on 06.06.1996. On 17.06.1996 the demolition work began. The ship is said to have achieved a scrap price of 194.- USD per LWT (LWT = Light Weight Ton).
