The MSC DANIELA is actually the first container vessel of this super class, which was built for MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A., Geneva, Switzerland. However the vessels built by Samsung Heavy Industries Ltd., Geoje Shipyard, Geoje in South Korea have a slightly reduced capacity of only 13,798 TEU, as compared to the DSME built vessels, which have a capacity of 14,000 TEU. The dimensions for all vessels are the same, but the draft of the Samsung ships was stated in the press, as being only 15.60 m, which is 0.40 m less. Therefore the deadweight is slightly reduced by approximately 9000 metric tonnes, as opposed to the Daewoo ships. The reasons for these differences are not very clear, it appears, that the vessels of both shipyards were built from the same design.
The keel of MSC DANIELA was laid on 04.08.2008 and she was launched on 15.10.2008. She is 366.07 m long, 51.20 m wide and has a depth of 29.90 m. The summer deadweight is 156,301 metric tonnes on a draught of 15.60 m. The vessel has a capacity of 13,798TEU. The nine deck high bridge superstructure is separated from the aft engine room and its engine casing/funnel superstructure and is situated about one third from the bow. This location improves the visibility, as demanded by IMO-regulations and aft of the bridge, containers can be stowed on deck 9 tiers high, enhancing the carrying capacity.
Propulsion is by one 12-cylinder, slow speed crosshead diesel engine of MAN-B&W design, type: 12K98MC-C. The power developed is 72,240 kW (98,250 BHP) at 104 RPM and gives an approximate speed of 24.10 knots.
