This gearless bulk carrier was built under the name "AKADEMIK DAVITAYA" by Georgi Dimitrov Shipyard, Varna, Bulgaria under the hull No. 151 for the Georgian Shipping Company of Batumi, Soviet Republic of Georgia. The keel was laid on 28.02.1982, the launching was on 01.12.1982 and the delivery to her owners was on 10.06.1983. LR/IMO No: 8208701, official No: M-32395, call sign: UMAN.
Its main dimensions were 184.63 m length overall, a beam of 22.81 m and a depth of 14.15 m. The carrying capacity was 24’150 metric tonnes DWT on a summer draught of 10.10 m. The hull was divided into 7 cargo holds with 7 hatches with a total volume capacity of 29’313 m3.
Contrary to the later built ships "Sedoy" and "Vakhtangov" the main propulsion consisted of one 6-cylinder, slow speed diesel engine, H.Cegielski-Sulzer, built in Poland, type: 6 RND-76, giving a total output of 12’000 BHP, directly coupled to one solid propeller. Electrical power was supplied by 3 diesel generators, H. Cegielski-Sulzer, type: 5AL25 of 550 kW each at 750 RPM. One emergency diesel generator from the GDR (East Germany) was also fitted.
In late 1994 the vessel was transferred to Anglo-Georgian Shipping Company Ltd. in London and flagged out to the Maltese registry. The technical management was allocated to ABC Maritime AG in Nyon.
The "AKADEMIK DAVITAYA" was taken over on 16.10.1994. She was renamed "DAVITAJA" and registered in Valletta. Owners: Davitaja Shipping Company Ltd., Valletta, Official No: 4262, call sign: 9HMI4.
On 06.02.1998 the technical management was transferred to Anglo-Eastern Ship Management (U.K.) Ltd., Glasgow and later in July 1999 it was again transferred to Columbia Shipmanagement Ltd., Limassol, Cyprus.
In November 1999 sold to Blow Shipping Ltd., Valletta, Malta (Agent: Eurocarriers S.A., Athina) and renamed "CHRISTY". The technical management was changed to Allseas Marine S.A., Athina, Greece. Fitted with 4 x 16 tons. SWL (Safe Working Load) cranes.
In May 2001 sold to Christy Shipping Ltd. George Town, Cayman Islands (Agent: Eurocarriers S.A., Athina). The technical management remained with Allseas Marine S.A., Athina. The vessel was not renamed, but was put under the flag of Cayman Islands. Official No: 734559, call sign: ZCFX3.
